KLAARA Award

As part of KLAARA 2027, an international award for the best doctoral thesis on Easy Language will be awarded for the first time. This award is intended to recognise outstanding researchers whose work advances the academic discourse on Easy Language and provides concrete impulses for Accessible Communication in society, public administration, the media, education, healthcare and other social contexts.

The international 2027 KLAARA Award for dissertations on Easy Language is sponsored by Wort & Bild Verlag, one of the leading providers of accessible health communication in Germany.

The 2027 KLAARA Award is remunerated with €4,000.

 

Aims and Profile of the Award

The KLAARA Award has three key objectives:

  1. To promote excellent early-career research in the field of Easy Language, language optimised for comprehensibility, and Accessible Communication.

  2. To strengthen the academic foundation of Easy Language and Accessible Communication.

  3. To highlight research with a significant impact on the study and practice of Easy Language and Accessible Communication.

The award recognises dissertations that focus on Easy Language, Plain Language or closely related forms of Accessible Communication. The works must have been published since January 2025 or submitted for examination. Grades must already have been awarded. Submitted works should be methodologically sound and scientifically rigorous. Supervisors and authors may submit applications.

The scientific committee consists of high-ranking experts from seven countries. They are responsible for the evaluation and selection of the award winners. The following experts are members of the award committee:

  • Camilla Lindholm (Finnland)

  • Chris Maaß (Germany)

  • Anna Matamala (Spain)

Call for Entries and Submission Guidelines

The international call for entries for the award will be issued in summer 2026. To ensure that the winner can travel to Hildesheim for the conference and present their work to the plenary session, the nomination and selection process will be completed in good time before the conference begins. The winner’s travel expenses will be covered by the sponsor, Wort & Bild Verlag.
